There is an outreach opportunity with The Outdoor Church of Cambridge. For the past several years on the fifth Sunday of the month FCCW has provided 3-5 volunteers who help distribute sandwiches & material resources to those who live on the streets of Harvard & Central Squares. We meet @ Harvard-Epworth Church @ 2:00 and return around 5:00. If you would like to serve please email Lisa Loughlin @ lisa3abp@aol.com.

The Outdoor Church of Cambridge (TOC)sends a big thank you to the Mission & Outreach Ministry of First Congregational Church in Winchester. Your generous donation of $250 worth of CVS gift cards and $250 worth of Target gift cards have been enthusiastically received by our congregants in Porter Square, Harvard Square and Central Square. Mass restaurant closures have left the homeless without a place to go to get a free cup of water. With these $5 gift cards the homeless can buy bottled water or buy a reusable water bottle that can be filled in the restroom.

Serve The Outdoor Church from home this week

Due to the Ripley Chapel construction our church kitchen has lost a lot of space. So this month we thought we would ask individuals or families to make 10-15 sandwiches from home and then bring them to the refrigerator downstairs in the kitchen anytime this week between Thursday – Sunday.

Also, this month there are still opportunities to deliver sandwiches to the members of The Outdoor. Sunday afternoon at 1:30 a small group will leave FCCW & head to Harvard Square. There we will connect with the ministers of The Outdoor Church, and gather up some water, toiletries & socks which we will offer to those we encounter as we walk through Harvard & Central Squares in Cambridge. On our walk we will have the opportunity to engage the homeless, sometimes by doing something as simple as making eye contact, smiling as you hand them a sandwich, talking to them, or simply listening to what they have to say. Whatever your comfort level is your presence will be meaningful for all involved.

The Mission & Outreach Ministry hopes that you will prayerfully consider these opportunities to serve our neighbors whose bodies and souls need & deserve physical & spiritual sustenance.

Begin New Year’s Eve with your community of faith in the act of worship as we close one year and open ourselves to God’s future in the year to come. We’ll revisit a particular moment in the Christmas story that for Luke was foretold by the sacred texts of the past and foreshadowed what awaited them in the future. We’ll sing carols, pray together and bless the ingredients gathered for the Outdoor Church as we pray for those who have no home especially now in the bitter cold of mid-winter.
