In our scripture for this Sunday (Luke 13:1-9) Jesus tells a parable about a vineyard owner who wants to cut down a tree that won’t bear fruit until his gardener suggests putting some compost around it and giving it one more year. The parable comes as a further response to people coming to Jesus disturbed by current violent events and trying to understand them theologically. Jesus seems to suggest their thinking is full of… “compost” and redirects them.
