There is a beautiful and difficult moment in John’s gospel chapter 12 when Mary anoints Jesus feet to prepare him for his death that is coming. It’s an expression of acceptance and love that is unparalleled in the gospels. And along with it comes the controversy of the extravagance of the offering and how it counters Jewish law at the time.
