  • ISA Takes on Support of a New Family!

Immigrant Support Alliance has a new family to support: an Afghan family of a dad, mom, and a boy and a girl, ages 5 and 6. We have found them an apartment in Medford, near a school and public transportation. Now we want to help them settle in at their new home.

Here’s a preliminary list of furnishings they need: (Other items will possibly come from Mission of Deeds when they visit later in the month.) Items should be new or used but in good condition.  This list will change as promises are made and additional needs are identified.

    • Kitchen items – large fry pan (12”), set of mixing bowls, glasses (large and small).
    • Living Room – TV stand, rug.
    • Parents’ bedroom – 2 lamps, 2 nightstands, blanket (queen).
    • Kids’ bedroom – 1 dresser
    • Bath – 2-4 hand towels (can be any color)
    • Cleaning – vacuum

Please email Linda or Bruce Alexander if you have an item to donate so we can keep track of the family’s needs as we get them moved in.

    There are also volunteer opportunities:

    • Transportation volunteer. Drive clients to medical and other appointments. Also teach clients how to get around on bus and T. Booster seats have been acquired and will likely fit in your car. Help with getting them placed when you drive can be made available.
    • Volunteer to help family become familiar with their community. Take them to food pantry, Medford library, grocery, pharmacy, and other stores, teach about the transportation system, farmer’s market, offer to include the family in fun activities in the area, and museums.
    • English conversation and/or tutoring. Get together with client to have a conversation or go to an event, or have a mini-English lesson, help with filling out a job application, practicing for job interviews.

To volunteer, send your name, contact information (email and phone number) and availability to Linda or Bruce Alexander and we’ll put you on a contact list).

Note: ISA is a nonprofit coalition of volunteers that partners with immigrant resettlement agencies and others to provide food, housing, financial, and social support to our clients (refugees and asylum seekers), helping them on their journey towards becoming independent, contributing members of our communities.
