September Focus — Immunity for Fall and Winter
Valuable Vaccine News from Michelle, RN
Chart below shows respiratory virus activity in Massachusetts last year (source: CDC.gov).
RSV peaked in early-to-mid-November, Flu in mid-December, and COVID in early January.
- Did you know there’s a new RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccine available for those 60 years and older? Consider getting one sooner rather than later as this virus typically circulates earlier than the Flu.
- Flu and high-dose Flu vaccines available now. 65+ eligible for high-dose option!
- Brand new COVID monovalent vaccine coming this week – updated to protect against current variant. Bivalent no longer available. Everyone 6 months and older is eligible. Must be at least 2 months since the last dose of a COVID vaccine. Consider waiting 3 months after a positive COVID test.
- Data from last year indicates Flu and COVID vaccines may be given safely simultaneously. Data pending on co-administration of RSV vaccine.
- Consider getting RSV vaccine now and Flu and COVID vaccines two weeks later.
- CVS in Winchester says the new COVID vaccine will be available there later in September.
- As always, consult with your doctor if you have any questions/concerns.
Nutrition Nuggets from Pam, CWE
Kiwifruit
Kiwifruit is a great breakfast food, but can be eaten any time of the day, added to a fruit salad or yogurt.
It is a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber, which is beneficial for immunity and your gut microbiome. Kiwi has 3 times as much vitamin C as an orange, on a weight basis.
